Latest patent further strengthens company's intellectual property

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., April 30, 2002- Geomagic announced today that it has been issued a U.S. patent for its process of automatically generating 3D digital models from scanned point-cloud data. The wrap process now protected under U.S. patent 6,377,865 is used throughout the Geomagic product line.

"This is confirmation that our wrap process is unique and proprietary," says Ping Fu, president and CEO of Geomagic. "We will continue to be aggressive in seeking patents for our proprietary technology and protecting those patents." The company also holds a patent for morphing technology and has five additional patent applications pending.

Geomagic's wrap process is used widely in dental, hearing and other custom manufacturing applications where simplicity, automation and throughput are critical to successfully transitioning from manual to digital processes. The company cites four major advantages of the patented process:

  • It can handle any kind of scanned data, providing a universal interface to all 3D data capture devices.
  • It provides fully automatic 3D geometry processing, quickly transforming points into detailed polygon models.
  • The resulting shape can be easily edited without losing the integrity of geometric and topological properties.
  • It provides filters that enable efficiency in processing very large sets of measurements without sacrificing accuracy.

Geomagic (www.geomagic.com) provides 3D photography solutions for digital manufacturing, mass customization and quality assurance. In addition to its flagship products, Geomagic Studio and Geomagic Qualify, Geomagic offers customized software for vertical markets such as hearing instruments and dental devices. Manufacturers worldwide - including Toyota, Harley-Davidson, Fisher-Price, Align and many others - turn to Geomagic to provide the technology for customizing products, automating processes, and increasing throughput.
