Fundamentals of Arthroscopic Surgery Training (FAST) Module

The FAST Program was initiated in 2011 as a collaborative effort of the three leading American orthopedic societies:

  • Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA)
  • American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS)
  • American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS)

The Program is based on the tenet that basic surgical skills are best developed sequentially and that advanced proficiency should be predicated upon successful completion of a basic skills curriculum.

FAST module includes:

  • Didactic content – The FAST Module contains six didactic programs with valuable content found in the Simbionix MentorLearn curricula management system:
  1. Basic Principles of Arthroscopy
  2. Basic Triangulation Skills
  3. Basic Interventional Arthroscopy
  4. Suture Anchors
  5. Passing Suture through Tissue
  6. Arthroscopic Knot Tying
  • Hands-on – The FAST Module provides hands-on training of arthroscopy skills to help facilitate learning of the basics to become a better surgeon. These include eleven basic tasks that are delivered in an ambidextrous configuration.
  • Metrics – to provide the learner with immediate feedback that will allow him to evaluate his progress and understand what arthroscopic key elements need to be improved.
