3DS provides design and manufacturing support in 3D printing VRTX I headset, tailor-made for the LG G3 Quad HD smartphone Selective Laser Sintering used to make headset ultra lightweight, highly functional and durable Entire design-to-manufacturing completed in less than 30 days, demonstrating time-to-value advantages of 3D printing

ROCK HILL, South Carolina, September 2, 2014 3D Systems (NYSE:DDD) announced today that it has partnered with Vortex VR, Inc., an emergent leader in virtual reality technology, and GameFace Labs, to develop the VRTX I, Vortex VR’s new virtual reality mobile phone case and head mounted display (HMD) device. The VRTX I provides stunning, high-definition VR immersion without wires and is tailor-made for the new LG G3 Quad HD smartphone.

3DS designers contributed advanced manufacturing and materials expertise in designing the VRTX I to be lightweight, highly functional and durable. The HMD devices were then 3D printed using 3DS’ advanced Selective Laser Sintering technology. By relying on 3D printing, the VRTX I team was able to complete the entire design-to-manufacturing process in less than 30 days, without the need for lead-times and costly tooling.

“This is an exciting project for 3D Systems, one that combines the power, flexibility and rapid time-to-value enabled by 3D printing with the incredible advancements in virtual reality and wearables,” said Cathy Lewis, Chief Marketing Officer, 3D Systems. “This will change how we design, manufacture and interact with these exponential technologies forever.”

“With our technology partners, GameFace Labs and 3D Systems, we have been able to rapidly bring to market a mobile case and device with technology that has been developed to best leverage the Android OS, along with the powerhouse of hardware within the G3,” said David Haines, Chairman and Interim CEO, Vortex, VR, Inc. “This is the mobile VR experience everyone has been waiting for.”

The VRTX I is Vortex VR, Inc.’s inaugural product. The company plans to launch additional products and services that will cover the entire VR ecosystem and value chain in the coming months.
