Direct metal printing (DMP) is a successful and effective solution for manufacturing smaller, high-mix, low-volume applications for the spine and extremities. Yet, when it comes to producing larger volume devices with fewer part numbers, the advantages must outweigh the costs of using this technology over conventional manufacturing techniques.

3D Systems has increased the productivity of its DMP printing platforms to help lower the total cost of ownership (TCO) for manufacturers, making primary large joint arthroplasty implant production commercially and technically viable. Adding a second laser with a high-speed dual feed recoating system reduces production times by up to 50 percent. In the case of acetabular cups, we were able to achieve 2X faster build times at a layer thickness of 60 microns and 3X faster speeds at LT90.

The brief also includes valuable information about:

  • Advantages of multi-laser DMP systems
  • The DMP Flex 350 Dual and DMP Factory 350 Dual as a holistic solution
  • How the printer is validated according to global medical device industry regulatory requirements
  • Details about how we achieved significantly faster production speeds
